Clean Desk vs. Cluttered Desk...

“Some studies suggest that as much as 15 percent of your work week
can be consumed with a messy desk—either by being distracted by
things that are in sight, or by having to look for things,” says
Dr. Donald E.Wetmore of the Productivity Institute.

Barbara Hemphill, CEO of Hemphill Productivity Institute, has
weighed in on the topic of messy desks on numerous occasions.
Her book, Love it or Lose It: Living Clutter-Free Forever,
co-written with Maggie Bedrosian, describes how to tame a messy
approach at the workplace.

Hemphill offers the following ten tips to get yourself (and your
desk) going in the right direction.

1. THE LOVE IT OR LOSE IT PRINCIPLE: Every item around you
represents a choice you made. You either went out and selected
it; or it came to you, and you accepted it. Look at that item
now with fresh eyes. If you do not find the item useful, believe
it to be beautiful, or love it for personal reasons, it’s time
to get rid of it. In other words, love it or lose it. Love what
nourishes your dreams and directions, lose what drains or
distracts you. Call this process your “Clutter Campaign.”
