Gary Erickson - part 3
6. Development of his "2080" program - where ON
company time - employees are permitted to
volunteer for various community service projects,
such as the one the company developed in 2001
- where they deliver Meals On Wheels and also
building homes for Habitat for Humanity and work
to fight breast cancer...
(the more and more I discover about this company
in my research for this article - the more and more
I am in awe of Gary Erickson, and CLIF BAR, Inc.)
Sounds like a really great company to work for,
doesn't it ?? Others thought so as well... Clif
Bar, Inc. was awarded the Business Ethics Award
in 2004 for general excellence.
Someone else that speaks highly of Clif Bar & Co.
would be Deborah Nelson of San Francisco...
she works at the Social Ventures Network (SVN)
a nonprofit company founded in 1987 committed
to using various businesses to build SOCIAL
RESPONSIBILITY... a noble goal that very well
may put members of that company on my
"Meet & Hug List" as well...
Deborah was recently quoted as having said
in regards to the Clif Bar Inc. work team:
"A team of Clif Bar employees discovered the
most packaging waste came from secondary
packaging processing, shipping, storage, and
point-of-purchase displays"
With that knowledge Gary and the Clif Bar, Inc.
team worked to eliminate as much waste as possible
by switching packaging over from plastic shrink-wrap
to 100-percent recycled paperboard according to
a Clif Bar press release... also in that press
release it was reported that the company saved
7,500 trees and 3 million gallons of water
annually by making these packaging changes... in
addition to those important environmental
benefits the packaging changes also resulted in
cutting costs by $500,000 per year...
